After walking for hours around the Plitvice Lakes yesterday, our weary little legs were begging us to find something a bit gentler for today. The town of Rastoke was just what we needed. It is a delight of streams, waterfalls, rivers and watermills and only half an hour’s drive away. It is a real antidote to the lakes, as it attracts a fraction of the number of visitors that its famous neighbour has to cope with. So you can wander around at your own pace and just enjoy all the little nooks and crannies.
There are parts of the town that you have to pay to enter but it is free to just explore the rest. One warning that I would make is that parking is pay and display. It is only 6Kn per hour. The problem is that the machines only take coins. So make sure you have plenty of change before you head off.
After a good look around, lunch was calling us. We only wanted a snack but most of the restaurants wanted to serve larger meals. Then we found the rather unfortunately named Bistro Kum. We ordered two different versions of their lasagna. You never quite know what you are going to get with lasagna. Some are good. Some are not so good. We need not have worried, these ones were the best ones I have come across in years.
So if you are looking for an antidote to the crowds at Pritvice Lakes. Have a look half an hour up the road. Rastoke will delight you.
