Why spoil the story of Korcula?

Korcula

One of James’ favourite sayings is “Why let the truth spoil a good story”. And this is certainly true of the gorgeous Croatian island town of Korcula. Their big claim to fame is that Marco Polo was born here. But when you do some further research you come across wonderfully ambiguous statements like “Polo is reputed to have been born in Korcula itself, although evidence to support this thesis is at best sketchy”. Love it! Anyhow we will go with it as they have built a large, very plush tourism line around it. James especially liked the idea of the Marco Polo ice creams.

One of the many beautiful little alleyways in Korcula’s old town, and also our home for our two nights here.

Notwithstanding where Marco was born. Korcula is a seriously pretty spot. Being just under two hours on a ferry from Dubrovnik it is a favourite holiday spot for Croatians. Our AirBnB host was keen to send us off to beaches or other islands for our one day here. But we just wanted to explore the wonderful old town of Korcula and get lost down alleyways and sit and gaze at the sea.

Looking through the yachts and cats to the old town of Korcula and then mainland Croatia in the distance.

Whilst we were fantasy yacht shopping we happened to notice one of the swimmers was up to something a little unusual. On closer inspection we saw he was indeed shampooing his hair, and then having a full wash. Thankfully attired in his swimming trunks the whole time. I assumed he was a homeless man and was feeling a bit sad for him. But my beloved had a much more colourful theory, that he was an eccentric millionaire from one of the super yachts we had just been admiring. Of course we never found out the truth, but then as James would say “Why let the truth spoil a good story!”.

Homeless man or eccentric millionaire? you decide!
